Electrical enclosures: plan the metalwork before you order
An electrical enclosure order starts with what must fit inside it and how the finished unit will be installed. This page helps a buyer prepare the enclosure scope so the fabricator, panel builder and installation team work from the same information.
Separate the enclosure from the electrical assembly
Write down what you want delivered: a bare housing, individual panels, a welded cabinet or a fabricated assembly. Then identify the items supplied by your panel builder. Switchgear, wiring, controls and electrical testing should not be assumed to be part of a metalwork quotation. For mounting plates, hinges, locks and cable gland plates, state the requirement and ask what is included in the offer. A simple scope list helps you compare quotations that might otherwise cover different work. It also avoids discovering during assembly that an opening or mounting feature was left for somebody else to provide.
Start with the equipment layout and installation space
Share the overall cabinet drawing together with the mounting layout. Mark cable entry direction, door opening direction and any wall or floor mounting interfaces. Show the usable internal space, not just the outer dimensions. A folded return, welded bracket or internal plate can occupy space needed for a component or cable bend. Describe how the cabinet reaches its final position and whether removable panels are needed for access. These are drawing review questions, not a promise that a particular design meets an electrical standard. Your equipment designer should approve the clearances and final arrangement before production.
Specify finish and exposure without assuming a rating
Tell us whether the enclosure will be indoors, outdoors, near moisture or exposed to cleaning chemicals. State the required material and finish on the drawing, or identify them as items needing review. Our published fabrication work includes mild steel, galvanised sheet, stainless steel and aluminium, with powder coating and other finishes considered against the job. A painted cabinet is not automatically waterproof. If ingress protection is required, your specification must cover the finished assembly, including seals, doors and cable entries. Agree who is responsible for validation; do not treat a requested IP rating as a rating already achieved by the enclosure.
Make inspection requirements clear before cutting
Identify the dimensions that affect installation: mounting centres, equipment cut-outs, door clearance and the fit between joined panels. Reference a drawing revision so a later email does not silently replace the approved geometry. If appearance matters, specify the visible surfaces, finish reference and areas where coating must be excluded. The factory has a separate in-house QC team carrying out dimensional inspection on batches before dispatch. Discuss any required inspection records when seeking a quote. It is better to agree the acceptance points before fabrication than to introduce a new checking method after parts have been made.

Common questions
Does this include switchgear and wiring?
This enquiry is for metal parts and enclosures. Specify the fabricated assembly you need and keep switchgear, wiring and electrical testing responsibilities separate. Any supplied or fitted hardware should be confirmed in the quotation.
What if the equipment layout is not final?
Send the current drawing and identify the dimensions or component positions still under review. Resolve the mounting layout and revision before approving production, especially where later changes would require new openings or panels.
Can I request an enclosure with an IP requirement?
You can include the requirement for review, but it must not be treated as an existing certified rating. The complete design, seals and entries need an agreed validation route and a clear responsibility for testing.
