Describe the environment and installation
Tell the fabricator where the enclosure will be used: indoor equipment room, shop floor, washdown area or an outdoor location. Describe expected exposure and maintenance needs without assuming that a particular material or coating automatically provides the required protection. If a rated enclosure is required, specify the standard, target rating and validation responsibility in the enquiry.
- Available external space and required internal clearances.
- Wall, floor, machine or rack mounting arrangement.
- Cable entry locations, connector access and service clearances.
- Any environmental or certification requirements to be reviewed.
Review the material with the application
Material selection depends on the operating environment, mechanical loads, finish, weight and manufacturing method. Ask for the proposed grade and thickness to be identified in the quotation. Where several materials may be suitable, compare complete fabricated and finished costs rather than raw sheet cost alone. Material substitutions should be approved before production.

- Identify weight limits and structural support points.
- Request certificates or traceability where your project requires them.
Plan access, assembly and service
Check whether technicians can install and replace components without removing unrelated assemblies. Show door swing, removable panels, fastener access and any gasket interfaces on the drawing. Identify surfaces where coating must not interfere with fit, threads or electrical bonding. Electrical safety and thermal performance should be reviewed by the responsible equipment designer.
- Hinged or removable access panels and preferred fastening method.
- Component mounting plate, studs, rails and hardware scope.
- Ventilation openings and filters specified by the equipment designer.
- Visible surfaces, acceptable weld locations and edge-finish requirements.
Approve a representative prototype
Use a prototype to check the complete assembly, not just the shell’s outside dimensions. Install representative components and cables, open the service panels and check that the product can be assembled in the intended sequence. Record changes against a new drawing revision. Approving the sample without updating the drawing leaves repeat orders open to interpretation.
- Confirm the fit of mating parts and mounted components.
- Inspect doors, panel gaps, cable routing and access.
- Agree a finish sample where appearance matters.
- Record dimensional checks and the approved revision.
